The Kingdome Comes Down...

 November 2000

110100a.jpg (60850 bytes)http://www.puterweb.com/sdennis/110100.jpg (59167 bytes)Wednesday, November 1, 2:30 p.m. - Another beautiful day and so photo.  So you get two again... But, mainly I wanted to show you how much of those rock piles are disappearing.  At this rate, they should be gone by the weekend.  It will be like losing an old friend.  They have dominated my view now for so long!  I can't tell what they are doing with all the rocks but they must be using them somewhere.  You can see where the rocks were are bunches of new concrete seats ready to be installed.  I'll bet they finish those off in the next day or two, too.
110200.jpg (62693 bytes)Thursday, November 2, 4:15 p.m. - For the past 2 days I have made it a point to get home during the day to snap a shot.  On both days, when I got home after work the photo op was much better.  This afternoon the light makes a really pretty scene.  Today they put that plastic on seats that I can see (circle on the right).  The circle on the left is around a catwalk that you can't see well but there is a veritable herd of workers on it right now.  Maybe it's a meeting.
110300.jpg (52674 bytes)Friday, November 3, 4:15 p.m. - Today's circle highlights an every growing thing (another technical term) in the middle of the field.  It looks, in the photo, as if it is the base of that rusty steel thing, but actually it's in front of it.  It looks like a form into which they might pour concrete.  Possibly it's where all the rocks are going?  It brings to mind a question I've had about the field... is it going to be raised up to meet what now appears to be the lower rung of seats?  Hmmmm  On a photo note, today's photo has too many shadows in it.  It makes a nice image but you can't see stuff too well.  I'm going to try the mid day photos again next week and see if I can get you more detail.
110400.jpg (62509 bytes)Saturday, November 4, 1:45 p.m. - In today's picture you cna really see the plastic I was talking about yesterday.  There isn't much work going on today that I can see.  They've stockpiled more concrete seats where the rocks used to be.  Looks like to me they've got what they need on site now ready for installation.
110500.jpg (55949 bytes)Sunday, November 5, noon - Nothing going on today. This photo looks like it is really a dreary day but it really isn't.  It's overcast but not even very cold.  Kind of a nice, Fall day.  The Auto Show is going on at the Exhibition Hall (between the construction and Safeco Field).  There is a lot of hooting and hollerin' out on the street and the only thing I can figure is that it's coming from the auto show crowd.  Must be some pretty exciting cars in there!
110600.jpg (62252 bytes)Monday, November 6, 4:15 p.m. - Would you look at that sky??!! Wow. If I were on the east coast I would sure know a storm (lightening/thunder - the whole works) was minutes away.  Here, however, it could be rain on its way or it could be just a cool looking sky.  Ok, now... does everyone see the new thing today??!!  It's quite the milestone.
110700.jpg (56811 bytes)Tuesday, November 7, 4:15 p.m. - That center section that I have circled is going to be something.  I just can't figure out what.  There seems to be a lot of action today but I can't find any really big new stuff.  And, congrats to those who successfully picked out the new lump (and really that's what they call them!) on the northeast tower.
110800.jpg (55370 bytes)Wednesday, November 8, 1:30 p.m. - Well, a lot like the election, the votes on what that center thing don't have a clear winner.  Kaj, who now has an office with a view of the site and Rich both think that it's part of the supports put in place for the roof building.  But Charlie (from Japan!) and John from Texas went back110800a.jpg (32776 bytes) to the mock up I posted on October 8 and think it might be that center scoreboard tower.   When you look at that mockup, well, here I'll repost - Charlie added a red circle to help us out...  Initially, I thought maybe the thing they are building is too far south to be that tower but now I'm not so sure. The mystery, along with the election, remains unsolved so far!
110900.jpg (57488 bytes)Thursday, November 9, 4:15 p.m. - There is a lot of activity on site today but about the only real difference I see is that they have finished the west side form on the northwest tower. Judging by the schedule they had on the northeast tower, those forms should be off by the weekend and nearly ready for the last lump.  Now, on that center thing... I've got people changing their votes!  Kaj can see it from his office window and he says "it looks as if it is north of where the field would be.  Besides, I haven't heard of any changes in the NFL rule book that places a concrete wall on the 50 yard line.  But that might end up helping the Seahawk defense...." Ken E.  had a really good suggestion... check out Dan Sherbeck's camera.  It's pointed right at the entrance and doesn't show any sign yet of that scoreboard tower.  While you are Dan's page, check out his new mini cam - it lets you set the refresh rate.  Tres Kewel.
111000.jpg (61524 bytes)Friday, November 10, 4:15 p.m. - The northwest wall is taking shape at least the side I can see.  They are laying in the walkways you will use to get to the seating area.  It's very cool looking.  Otherwise it seems to be work as usual.  No change in the center whatever thing.
111100.jpg (174947 bytes)Saturday, November 11, 3 p.m. - Warning before you click!  Today's is another big picture.  I did a little physical reconnaissance today to see if I could get some info on that center thingie.  Here's the deal.  First of all it is not nearly as close to the rusty steel thingie as it looks in the photos.  There are about 20 car lengths between them!  Also there seems to be a similar structure going up on the west side of what will be (?) the field.  So, what I found out is that doing up close and personal work really confuses what was already pretty confusing.
111200.jpg (56845 bytes)Sunday, November 12, 3:30 p.m. - It looks like they put in some more seats yesterday.  Not a creature stirring over there today.  Time to announce the Thanksgiving Break of the Kingdome pages... Yep, next Saturday through the following Saturday - November 18-25 - there won't be any pictures.  I'll be at my Mom's in South Carolina.  Won't it be fun to see all the action that occurred while I was gone?  We'll get that on the 26th, I promise.
111300.jpg (59719 bytes)Monday, November 13, 3 p.m. - There's a lot of work going on but I can't see any big news.  I did forget to mention one item from my Saturday reconnaissance...  There is a structure already built over the seats on the south end.  It's a rusty iron looking structure with a tin covering which has to be temporary.  But, it's a start.
111400.jpg (55906 bytes)Tuesday, November 14, 4 p.m. - The red circle in today's photo is what I believe is the start of the center tower scoreboard structure.  Today is the first day that I've noticed that it really does have a defined shape.  There are wooden frames for pouring concrete on the north side of it and around the edges.  It looks like there will soon be much action in this area.  I wish they would move that pile of rocks so I can get a better view!
111500.jpg (56581 bytes)Wednesday, November 15, 3 p.m. - I can take no credit for the arrow in tonight's photo.  Several of you guys pointed out the new steel there in the back when you saw last night's photo.  I didn't see it at all!  They added more today moving south around the east side.  Now the circle is around some rebar kind of things they put on the southwest wall today.  They look like they will be something important and they also look like any chances of my being able to see over that final wall are toast.
111600.jpg (55769 bytes)Thursday, November 16, 4 p.m. - 111600a.jpg (73302 bytes)They added more steel stuff to the roofing today.  My roving reporter found this cool rendering - a view we hadn't seen before.  And, it shows clearly, that the seats we see on the site today are not the lowest tier of seats.  I had wondered if they were going to raise up the field but, no, it looks like there's lots more seats to go!
111700.jpg (60847 bytes)Friday, November 17, 1 p.m. - Well, I hit the day-before-vacation-lottery!  I caught them moving the wooden form off the northwest tower!!!  You can see it as they almost have it lowered to the ground.  One more little section to go and then the last lump can go into place.  Also they've added even more to the western wall.  And, there is more steel going up on the roof structure stuff on the south side.  What a big day.  I neglected, yesterday, to explain the perspective of the drawing.  The view is due north and if you march out past the GTE (wonder how they got the free advertising here??) sign and go about another 50-100 yards and turn left you'll be in front of my condo.

I leave before daylight tomorrow morning so this is it until Sunday, November 26.  Hope everyone (even you guys in Japan and the UK and other non-US places) have a great Thanksgiving!

112500.jpg (42181 bytes)Saturday, November 25, 2:30 p.m. - I didn't think I'd get back before dark but I did so today's picture is a bonus.  Although, it's sure a soggy bonus!  You can see the new roof framing in the back (south and southeast).  They've done more work on the northwest wall.  And on the northwest tower.  I was kind of glad to see they held off adding the last lump until I got back!
112600.jpg (159439 bytes)Sunday, November 26, 10:45 a.m. - Big photo today just because.  Now, several of you apparently did not believe me when I said I wouldn't be posting a new photo until today and you checked yesterday!  There's no sneaking in a photo on you!  Rikketyrik rightly pointed out that what I called a roof yesterday is more likely just the upperdeck or maybe it's covering.  He also discovered in yesterday's photo that they have moved the rusty steel thing over to the east some and north a little bit...  Interesting, eh?  And, yes, I had a great time at my Mom's but I knew it was time to come home when she started complaining about no new construction photos on the website!!
112700.jpg (61146 bytes)Monday, November 27, 1:30 p.m. - Today's circle is around the now growing wall of what will be the scoreboard/north seating area thing.  We're looking at the last days of an unobstructed view, I suspect.  What will be the field is full of more concrete seats but since they haven't added any to the east side recently, I gotta think they are for the west side.
112800.jpg (55618 bytes)Tuesday, November 28, 11 a.m. - Not a whole lot new today but a whole lot of activity going on.  The noise level has really escalated since I got back.  It's cold enough that I keep the door to the terrace closed and don't hear the noise while inside, but when I go out there to take the photo, it's loud - just general construction din but loud construction din.
112900.jpg (14394 bytes)Wednesday, November 29, 6 p.m. - What can I say?  I got sucked into a vortex at work and couldn't get away to take a daylight photo.  I'm sooooo sorry!  I will plan better from now on, I promise.  They have been working at night in the area just north of the northeast tower.  Big lights.  But, of course, my poor camera isn't up to that challenge.
113000.jpg (59079 bytes)Thursday, November 30, 1:30 p.m. - More steel going up over the east side seats and the last tower is getting closer to lump-land.  As I type this, it is nearly 6 p.m. and I have the door open.  I can hear all kinds of construction work still going on in the dark.  Amazing.
