The New Stadium...

May 2002

remember, all photos are thumbnails - click on them to get the bigger version
When you see  you can click on it and get a really big, non-zoomed version of the day's photo!
Every Saturday I take an extra large photo and
every Sunday I replay the photo from the same day the year before.

Wednesday, May 1, 5 p.m. - The new photos up today at First and Goal explain more about the new artwork and show pictures of some other artwork coming up soon.  Hard to believe there are fewer than 60 days left to go!
Thursday, May 2, 5 p.m. - I was home at lunch and for really the first time since construction began I could clearly hear a whole lot of construction noise.  They dirt pushers were pushing, the concrete things here concreting, and everyone was making noise.  When I got home at 5 it was deader than a doornail and just as quiet.  Amazing.
Friday, May 3, 4 p.m. - There are changes every day in the plaza area and in the trailer area.  Sean reports that they were to have started laying the turf yesterday.  Funny how what I can't see doesn't seem to register with me.  Field?  Heck, when I could see in, I cared.  Now?  I want to see more trees and some grass in front.  To each his (or her) own.
Saturday, May 4, 10:30 a.m. - There are some people out there working today.  A painter is working on the railings along the northwest wall (you can see him in the XL photo) and some folks out in the plaza.  Yesterday's Post Intelligencer had a nice shot of the FieldTurf installation.  And Sean says they have decided to call the stadium Seahawks Stadium.
Sunday, May 5, 1:45 p.m. - Our local weather people usually miss the mark but today the horrible, cold, rainy, windy day they said was coming must have had other plans.  Yesterday they installed some poles or support like things - see the circles.  They look like they will hold up something - like a little roof of some kind?
Monday, May 6, 5 p.m. - They are working away at the Plaza.  More trees planted, more concrete poured, and some wire strung in between the poles they put in on Saturday.  Rikketryik reminded me of Charpy's high resolution photos.  Check out his latest from last Friday - it has a good view of the field and the plaza work.
Tuesday, May 7, 5 p.m. - They took down the wires between the poles but they are working on them as you can see in the photo.  They also installed a pole of directional signs at the top of the stairs (see circle).  More trailers gone.  And more concrete laid down.
Wednesday, May 8, 5 p.m. - They installed another directional flag pole today on the left hand side of the scoreboard at the top of the stairs.  Some kind soul posted a link to the Washington State Public Stadium Authority website (remember, these are the folks who told me to quit using their logo).  They have a nice photo of the 'grass' on the field.  Looks good and green!
Thursday, May 9, 5 p.m. - When I got home at 5 p.m. today I could clearly hear a band playing.  I swear it sounded like it was coming from inside the Seahawks Stadium.  The First and Goal web cam doesn't show the inside of the field.  I checked Safeco's web cam to see if they were playing here and if so, they aren't on the field.  Very strange.
Friday, May 10, 4 p.m. - Well, the marching band was back this morning and, yes, they were testing the sound system and the alarm system.  It was quite the symphony this morning!  They also got a delivery of what looks like some shrubs.  You'll see them in the XL photo tomorrow.  Oh and there are new photos up at First and Goal - quite a good one of the poles and it looks like they are making great bleacher installation progress.
Saturday, May 11, 2 p.m. - It's a three photo day!  There is a lot of noise out there today mainly because the encampment closest to me is being torn down completely.  The picture on the right has 2 circles - a big one where the encampment was and a smaller one way in the back around the shrubs that were delivered yesterday.  The right hand photo also shows you the gaps in trailer-ville.  They used to crammed in along that fence on the right and the one along the railroad in the back.  Now there are big holes where some of them used to be.
Sunday, May 12, 2 p.m. - We've had a few people working on and off today.  The arrow shows one worker doing something to one of the wells in the northwest tower.  Also I just noticed that they have pulled the plastic off that next tier of seats (in circle).  You can't really tell because that dumb sun is out, and I can't even tell when they did it... looks like maybe Friday.
Monday, May 13, 3 p.m. - Rikketryik found this cool link of pictures of the turf going in.  They cleared out a bunch of stuff from the parking lot/trailer area today and are working on what looks to be the top of the poles today.  I can't see any plastic left on any seats either.
Tuesday, May 14, 4 p.m. - Yes, it's a 3 picture day.  The second on on the left shows a major milestone.  On February 17, 2000 they started a dirt pile which became a huge pile of big rocks and then a huge pile of small rocks and then a big dirt pile and then a small dirt pile and a small dirt hump and today it totally disappeared.  Wow.  Hard to believe it's gone.  The picture on the right is one that Greg caught from Dan Sherbeck's webcam.  Bird Attack On The New Stadium!!
Wednesday, May 15, 4 p.m. - They did more clearing of the parking lot area today and right now they are testing the alarm system.  I can hear it and see it.  There are lights flashing all over the place.  Kind of cool looking.
Thursday, May 16, 5:30 - 2 arrows and a circle today!  The circle surrounds a little mini-tour I caught.  They were walking in a tight group all over the place.  The arrow towards the bottom points out what look like they are going to be the top of the poles.  But the most curious is the top arrow.  It looks like they have put plywood by the stairs there.  Wonder what that's going to be?
Friday, May 17, 5 p.m. - They spent more time prepping the new parking area today and planted some more shrubs.  They have also installed some pole lights over where the tree is in the way.  It's really shaping up out there.
Saturday, May 18, 11 a.m. - They started paving early this morning.  And, you can see in the XL photo that they've already done a lot.  They have also been testing the alarm system all morning long.  It's getting  a little annoying.  I drew a red circle around some of the windows in the suite boxes.  They look really green today for some reason.  It may be a reflection off the field but it doesn't look like it.  Strange.  Oh and there are new pictures up at First and Goal.
Sunday, May 19, noon - I got some inside info for you!  The plywood is a place holder for some mesh panels that haven't arrived yet.  The alarm testing is apparently quite involved.  It continues today and may go til Wednesday.  Fortunately, it's cold enough for me to keep the door closed so it's not so annoying.  On the field, the goalposts go in next week.  And the Turner trailer - the first one to go in - goes out the first week in June.  It will be very different not to see it!  It looks like the first 'do' will be July 20 with a fanfest.
Monday, May 20, 4 p.m. - They put the first of the tops of the poles up today.  Guess that's going to be one of the gateways to the complex.  They also installed kind of a walkway of plywood across the new blacktop.  You can see it in the bottom left hand side of today's photo - it goes across the blacktop to the area they haven't paved yet.
Tuesday, May 21, 3 p.m. - As you can see, they are testing the lights - check under the east side roof.  They put another top on the poles, too.  And, there are a couple of flowering trees that have been delivered (to the parking area) but not yet planted.  I'm leaving again for a few days - see note in red box - I expect the plaza area will look a lot different when I get back.
Wednesday, May 22, 4 p.m. - For all those times I've whined about the sun ruining my photo, today is retribution.  Look at that great sky and the light is perfect for catching details.  Wow.  They are still testing the lights as you can see.
Thursday, May 23, 4 p.m. - Different sky today!  They've done more little things to the plaza.  Oh and they have most, if not all, of the gating in at the top of the steps near the base of the grand staircase.  They still have those roof lights on.  That's one heck of a test.  Maybe they are trying to see how long the bulbs last.
Friday, May 24, 2 p.m. - It looks like a lot of the workers have left early for the long weekend.  They did some dirt work before they left and there are sprinklers going on in some of the dirt patches.  They have been testing the sound system since yesterday.  They are using some interesting music selections.  The camera is now going into the suitcase.  You folks behave while I'm gone.  Next picture - this time next week.
Friday, May 31, 2 p.m. - She's back!!!  Did you miss me?  The site is really shaping up!  They laid another layer of blacktop and are painting white lines today!  And they hoisted the flag atop the scoreboard.  You'll be able to see it in tomorrow's XL shot. They did a lot more planting of trees and shrubs.  There are only a handful of trailers left.  They have less than a month to go til their finish date of June 28 and I think they are going to make it.
