The New Stadium...

December 2001

remember, all photos are thumbnails - click on them to get the bigger version
When you see  you can click on it and get a really big, non-zoomed version of the day's photo!
Every Saturday I take an extra large photo and
every Sunday I replay the photo from the same day the year before.

Saturday, December 1, 12:30 p.m. - I just saw a golf cart zipping around the site but that's the first sign of life there I've seen all day.  It's so windy out that stuff is blowing around.  The workers may have to hunt for any of their stuff that isn't tied down when they come back on Monday.
Sunday, December 2, 11 a.m. - It's a cold and windy day out there today,  but it doesn't appear as if anyone is working out in the cold and wind.  Tony found this great link at First and Goal that talks all about the future of the grand staircase.  It sounds wonderful!
Monday, December 3, 3:30 p.m. - I didn't get a chance to check on the work too many times today but when I took this photo in mid afternoon, I couldn't see much work going on at all.  It was like everyone was at a meeting!  Kind of strange.  I was out this weekend and noticed that the southwest lump has been painted our northwest lump is the last unpainted lump.
Tuesday, December 4, 2:30 p.m. - You cannot see it at all in this photo but they have started putting the blue seats into that middle section - the ones they've installed are behind the center scoreboard.
Wednesday, December 5, 11:30 a.m. - Outside of the stairs, there just isn't much new stuff to see in our view.  I'm sure there are big strides being made in parts we can't see, but, our view is getting kind of static!
Thursday, December 6, 10:30 a.m. - Another day of no big changes.  Sorry.  Tomorrow's photo won't be up until late or until Saturday.  I will get a shot during the day, I promise, but I won't have time to post it - office holiday party right after work.
Friday, December 7, 10 a.m. - Sorry for the delay in posting but the party was great.  More stairs in and they've had a couple of days now without rain so I'm thinking the painting should be starting up fairly soon.
Saturday, December 8, noon - There is one lone guy out there today (that I can see).  I circled him.  It looks like he's putting down some kind of caulking stuff but it's really big caulking stuff - it's in rolls in bags new his bucket (they look like yellow beehives).
Sunday, December 9, 2:30 p.m. - It's a cold day out there but nobody seems to be out there working so it's ok, I guess.  I did see, on last night's Seahawks update that their executive boxes are getting pretty finished.  They showed one that already had a TV and refrigerator... and a great view!
Monday, December 10, noon - It was another cold, rainy day for workers.  And, again, no dramatic changes.  I'm sounding like a broken record here...
Tuesday, December 11, 2:30 p.m. - Amazing, I know, but today I have two things to point out!  1) Check the circle and you can see the latest blue seat installation! and 2) The sun is out!  and a bonus third thing... it isn't raining.  Amazing, I know.
Wednesday, December 12, 10:30 a.m. - Dave has a new report up on the ClamCam Forum.  He says that the new blue seats are actually black and cushioned!  I've been contacted by Chicken & Egg Public Projects - a design/research firm.  They are putting together a traveling museum show that will include the Kingdome.  I sent them my early non-digital photos to use.  They apparently haven't selected a west coast showplace yet.  I'm voting for Seattle!
Thursday, December 13, 11:30 a.m. - Well, with the wind and rain we've had today, the new stadium may well float or fly to another neighborhood!! I did watch a golf cart zoom through a puddle that turned out to be a small lake.  The water went right over the feet of the guys in it!  And this was this morning and it rained solidly and hard all day long.  Wild.
Friday, December 14, 1:30 p.m. - No rain today!  In fact, we had so much sun that today's photo is kind of hard to see.  But, you can see that they are just about done putting the steps in.  There was a lot of action around the site today.  People and trucks everywhere.
Saturday, December 15, 2:30 p.m. - The one day break is over and it's back to cold and rain. In today's big picture you can see what I'm calling Lake Rock Pile.  My theory is that when a puddle gets big enough for a golf cart to drowned in, it needs to be promoted to a lake.
Sunday, December 16, 10:45 a.m. - Look at this picture from this day last year!  It was from a time when we could first see the structure really taking shape.  Amazing, isn't it?
Monday, December 17, 2:30 p.m. - A sunny day!  And the workers took advantage.  Nearly all the steps are in.  Lots of hustle and bustle on the site.  I am getting a fair number of questions about the stadium's name.  I haven't heard a peep but I'm sure it's being worked on...
Tuesday, December 18, 1 p.m. - The last steps went in but there is still a lot of work going on there.  When it isn't raining there are a lot of people all over these steps. When it is raining, there is still a decent group doing all kinds of stuff.
Wednesday, December 19, 3 p.m. - On the news last night they had a story about the Seahawks' new locker room. Unfortunately, I cannot find a link. But, I do remember that they said the locker room is 1,600 square feet!  And I don't think that included all the ancillary team rooms.
Thursday, December 20, 1:45 p.m. - Well, I was a bit off on my square footage as it turns out!  Tony wrote that "Actually just the Hawks locker room is 16,000 square feet (not including the guest locker room)....There is a separate home/guest locker room for soccer...."  I think 16,000 square feet is just beyond my comprehension!
Friday, December 21, 11:30 a.m. - Today they were building a wall... it's the wall on the left of the staircase.  But, they sure knocked off early.  I got home about 3:45 and it was hard to find any movement on the site at all!   Christmas shopping maybe?
Saturday, December 22, noon - Well, there is sure not a creature stirring on the site today!  Wonder if this is what it's going to be like until Wednesday?  This could make for some boring entries...
Sunday, December 23, 3:30 p.m. - Well, there actually 1 change today... everything is dry!  We've had nearly 3 solid days with no rain. Lake Rockpile is gone and even the steps are dry.  Amazing.
Monday, December 24, 2:30 p.m. - Today is obviously a holiday on site.  Not a creature is stirring over there and it's a beautiful day for construction!  Dry, sunny and warm.  Oh well.
Merry Christmas!!
Tuesday, December 25, 2:45 p.m. -
Several folks have written about the lack of a Christmas tree on site.  But, I found one yesterday!  The entrance into the site from the north parking lot is a nice little hut that is all decorated for Christmas with a lovely looking tree.  Someone did a really neat job of dressing it all up.  You just can't see it from the terrace.
Wednesday, December 26, 3:15 p.m. - There was a little more action out there today but it still didn't seem like the full meal deal.  At least it was dry1
Thursday, December 27, 1 p.m. - I caught one worker up on the scoreboard mesh today.  Wonder what was happening up there?  And, I had totally forgotten to mention the great progress they are making on the staircase wall.   We need this stadium.  Today they played a football game at Safeco Field.  That's just not right.
Friday, December 28, 2:30 p.m. - I forgot to mention that more of those cushionie seats have been installed in that lower section on the east side.  More wall work on that right side of the stairway.
Saturday, December 29, 3:30 p.m. - I didn't notice until today but they put in another wooden stairway.  There's been one over on the left hand side of the grand staircase for weeks now but yesterday they added another one right down the middle.  Kind of strange looking.  They are also doing a lot of work in the 'yard' - the staging area north of the stadium.  They've put up a lot of temporary fencing and they are clearing a lot of it out.  Wonder what's going on there?
Sunday, December 30, 4 p.m. - It was a quiet day on the site today.  Every week I am amazed again by what the site looked like this time last year.  And, I think about what it's going to look like next year.
Monday, December 31, 3:30 p.m. - Well, today I got my third tour of the site!  You'll get the details tomorrow when I create the tour page complete with great photos.  But, those of you who have been paying attention in class will notice that the number of days til done has taken a big leap.  I found out that the stadium is scheduled to be completed in June 28!  I also found out that they clearing away of the yard is to start the work on the plaza that will be in front of the grand staircase.  Stay tuned for the details and photos tomorrow.
