The New Stadium...

September 2001

remember, all photos are thumbnails - click on them to get the bigger version
When you see  you can click on it and get a really big, non-zoomed version of the day's photo!
Every Saturday I take an extra large photo and
every Sunday I replay the photo from the same day the year before.
Saturday, September 1, 1 p.m. - We have kind of a gray day here but it looks like it's going to clear up for the afternoon.  There are a couple of people I can see on the site but not much action.  In today's big picture, you can see more of the westside roof action.
Sunday, September 2, 4 p.m. - It's absolutely a quiet day on the site today. In fact, the whole neighborhood seems to have gone for the weekend.  Tony, though, sent a note that he passed by the stadium yesterday on his way home from the Seahawks game and noted that they have added seating to the base under the scoreboard to give the whole seating area a very cool rounded look.
Monday, September 3, 1 p.m. - It's a gray Fall day here but all of the workers are enjoying it elsewhere.  There is a guy with a kid out by the rocks.  I guess the kid is enjoying a visit to Dad's office.
Tuesday, September 4, 5 p.m. - Good lighting in today's photo - some days you just get lucky and today is one of those days.  You can see more detail.  A lot of trucks going in and out and other action but nothing that I can really point to as different today.
Wednesday, September 5, 4:45 p.m. - There are even more seats in today.  Big Blue is missing from the photo but he's on site.  Currently he's sitting way south inside the bowl.
Thursday, September 6, 4:30 p.m. - I know that some of you are disappointed when you can't see something different on the site every day.  These past few days must leave you just bored to tears.  So sorry.  But, there just doesn't seem to be much action in our view.  There is stuff going on.  I can hear it, but it must be going on in the areas we cannot see.
Friday, September 7, 3:45 p.m. - The big news today is that they have painted the northeast lump!  It's a lovely color, too!  I can't believe that got that done in just a day.  Wild.  Big Blue got out again.  I'm sure going to miss his comings and goings.
Saturday, September 8, 2:30 p.m. - What a perfect day for the extra large photo.  It really shows today's action.  Yep, more paint!  There's this one guy (see left hand circle in big photo) who's been painting the whole north side all day.  He's amazing.  He's got this hose and he's just spraying away from his little basket on top of this long arm.  I'm guessing that the paint is in the truck below cause he never seems to stop and refill.  The second circle is the latest action.  The north side of the lump.  There are a couple of guys up there painting it right now.  I do like the color.
Sunday, September 9, 4 p.m. - The painter came back again today and finished up inside the elevator halls on that northeast tower.  The tower was in the way or the painter could have watched the Mariner game while he painted!  It was a great game.
Monday, September 10, 5:30 p.m. - Today they capped off the end of that thing that sticks out below the beak on the northwest tower.  I circled it.  I can't get a handle on their work schedule.  It's 5:30 as I write this and there is still a lot of work going on.  Last week, they were totally done by 4:30 on some days.
Tuesday, September 11, 4:30 p.m. - No words seem appropriate today so here's the photo.
Wednesday, September 12, 4:45 p.m. - Today's arrow points out where they added a new section of staircase.  They actually added it before Monday's photo but it took a note from Terry to point it out to me!  Today's circle show where they have removed that form they've been working with for a while.  But, maybe coincidentally, that's about where they had a fire today.  Yep, about 9 a.m. our office manager came running in to me and said 'you'd better go home and get a picture - there's a fire at the stadium!'  I couldn't get a picture because the sun was in the wrong place, but KIRO7 had a short piece about it on their website for a while - it's gone now.  They said "Welding sparks may have set roofing on fire at the stadium. Fire Department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick says workers used extinguishers to knock down the flames about 9:30 a.m. Firefighters with a hose were lifted in a crane. They finished putting out the fire about 150 feet above ground on the roof of an elevator control room. No one was injured."
Thursday, September 13, 4:30 p.m. - With all of yesterday's news, I forgot to mention that one of The Erection Company's welding dog houses was down by the rock pile yesterday.  It's gone today.  I need to go out and look and see how they are doing with that southwest beak.  I can't see it at all from my terrace.  Field trip needed.
Friday, September 14, 4:45 p.m. - Nearly all the seats are in that top big section and much of that smaller section just below it.  I totally forgot to mention that Dave posted a great little recap of a tour he got of the stadium site.  It's on the ClamCam forum.
Saturday, September 15, 5 p.m. - I took that field trip today.  The outside west side of the stadium is looking amazingly finished.  Some of the glass is in and nearly all of the brickwork.  It's looking really nice.  And, the southwest lump remains beakless.  It really looks like, oops, they forgot something.
Sunday, September 16, 4 p.m. - There were several workers in two buckets on the end of small cranes today working on the north end of that east side.  Even with my binoculars I couldn't tell what they were doing but they were out there for a good part of the day.
Monday, September 17, 4:30 p.m. - We have a new steel thing today.  Unfortunately, Big Blue is parked right in front of our view but you can kind of see it through him.  It's quite curious.  If you look at the renderings, there isn't anything like this but it looks too finished looking to be temporary.  Hey, Craneologist, could you move your arm a bit tomorrow so we can see better?
Tuesday, September 18, 1:30 p.m. - I made a point of getting home in the middle of the day to get today's photo cause I figured if I waited until after work, Big Blue would block our view again (and he did!).  But, now you can clearly see the new structure and we have the answer.... Tony, who checks out the east side of the stadium on his way to work, said he thought it was a scoreboard thing.  Kaj checked the Seahawks Find Your Seat tool and if you pick a seat at the south end, you can clearly see the new thing sticking up at the north end... But, Dave, gave it a name!  On the ClamCam forum., Dave says it is called a Hustle Board!  Thanks to all of you... Mystery solved!
Wednesday, September 19, 4:30 p.m. - Today you can really see the Hustle Board.  And, the circle below it show where they are starting some kind of side wall to the grand staircase.  Also Tony reported yesterday that they are starting to paint the east side stairwells (that would be on the outside of the part that we see).
Thursday, September 20, 4:30 p.m. - First of all, and most importantly... Congratulations to the Mariners!!!!  American League West Champions!!  The circle shows that they are adding on to that stair way feature they started yesterday.  And, there is a new BIG flag.  I neglected to mention that, last week, after an absence of a few weeks, they put the flag back on top of the big scoreboard.  And, it is still there although out of the photo along with this new big one.
Friday, September 21, 5 p.m. - Today they took the plastic off a large section of seats (see circle) and let that pretty blue show through. And, they started the outside stairway (see arrow) on the northwest side.
Saturday, September 22, 4:15 p.m. - There is a good bit of work going on today for a Saturday.  The big photo shows two big trucks mucking around on the rock pile.  Oh, and the stairway that I mentioned yesterday, is really the start of the far western side of the grand staircase.
Sunday, September 23, 3:45 p.m. - Not a lot going on today but there were a few people on site earlier today.  The picture from this day last year shows when I could still see the roof of Safeco Field.
Monday, September 24, 6 p.m. - I'm really running late today - I should have come home at lunch to get the photo.  We've got a real strange kind of fog thing going on right now so the photo is hazy.  Sorry.
Tuesday, September 25, 5 p.m. - We finally got some rain!  Every night for the past few weeks, a water truck has driven all around the site watering it down but the project has still been throwing out a ton of dust.  This rain will really help.  Plus, the water truck driver gets a night off!
Wednesday, September 26, 5 p.m. - Some days I get so lucky with the perfect lighting and today is one of those days.  I love today's photo.  It's been a few days since I've seen any real changes on the site.  They must be working hard on the parts we can't see.
Thursday, September 27, 5 p.m. - Another dramatic photo!  I hope this makes up for the crappy photo days.  Now, you just must go visit the ClamCam Forum.  Dave took another tour of the site and has posted a wonderfully detailed report.
Friday, September 28, 5 p.m. - When I took this photo there were a dozen workers lined up against that form on the east side of the grand staircase.  I circled them.  It looks like the concrete pourer thingie is pouring into that form and maybe they were just helping it along.
Saturday, September 29, 4:30 p.m. - In today's big picture, you can see that they are getting the west side roof painting pretty well finished and you can also see that they have been playing in the rock pile some more.  Not a lot of work going on there today but it was a nice day to play.
Sunday, September, 30, 3:30 p.m. - In the very top right hand corner of today's photo there's a circle.  Inside the circle is a painter painting the western arch.  It's really hard to see in the picture.  You'll have to trust me.  Sean sent a note that the big flag was missing from yesterday's photo.  And the flag on the pole is tightly wrapped around that pole so that it can't flap out.  The picture from last year shows a bit of a weather contrast!
