The Kingdome Comes Down...

July 2001

When you see  you can click on it and get a really big, non-zoomed version of the day's photo!
070101.jpg (123695 bytes)Sunday, July 1, 4:30 p.m. - I noticed today something that happened a couple of days ago.  In the red circle is what looks like giant cardboard there between the studs under those stairs.  Looks like it's like the beginning of some of the interior walls.  This time last year we had a pretty day but not much stadium!
070201.jpg (123004 bytes)Monday, July 2, 6:45 p.m. - The late afternoon sun gives you a good look at the east side seats.  They finished filling in the steps there on those treads there on the northeast tower.  And, there are concrete step looking things in front of where the big scoreboard will be but I don't think they are the beginning of the grand staircase.  They looks more like the seating - too deep for steps, I think.
070301.jpg (116112 bytes)Tuesday, July 3, 4:45 p.m. - More stuff going on.  That scoreboard area is really getting some action and there are all sorts of materials moving through.  I see them in the section off to the left of the photo one day and they are gone the next and replace with other stuff.  It's amazing all the parts and pieces that go into this thing!
070401.jpg (118334 bytes)Wednesday, July 4, 4 p.m. - Kaj wrote to point out (very kindly, I might add) that I totally missed the big news in yesterday's photo.  The dog house is gone from the northeast point!  There is still one on the southeast point but I can't see the missing dog house on the site... I suspect it's resting waiting for the west side to be ready.  Kaj also note that there are new photos up at the First and Goal site.
070501.jpg (119305 bytes)Thursday, July 5, 4 p.m. - Well, today we have a blue tarp added to the mix - see arrow.  The white thing hanging down is some sort of fabric just blowing there in the breeze.  Wonder what that's all about?  One of the blues was moving about when I snapped this and it has a very distinct whine...  Somebody needs some oil work.
070601.jpg (120712 bytes)Friday, July 6, 5:15 p.m. - We got a new blue tarp today but still no clue what's going on under there.  But, the big news is in the top right hand corner...  The west side arch is getting ready to grow across the roof!  That support just went up this afternoon.  The other news for this neighborhood is the All Star Game.  It's wild around here already and the game isn't until Tuesday!
070701.jpg (119633 bytes)Saturday, July 7, 5:30 p.m. - I forgot to mention yesterday that they finished installing the top stairs on the northeast tower.  There was a little bit of work going on today but not much.  The neighborhood was crawling with tourists and I caught many of them snapping photos of the new stadium.  It's fun to have all the visitors in town.
070801.jpg (121680 bytes)070800.jpg (60738 bytes)Sunday, July 8, 3 p.m. - On this day last year, I got a great shot of the Big Hill O' Rocks.  Today is it barely a little pile.  And the bare spot looks just like a stadium!  There was kind of interesting article in today's Seattle Times about the stadium and it has an interesting photo that shows a good bit of the parking lot taken up by a walkway.  Wonder if they will really do that?
070901.jpg (121097 bytes)Monday, July 9, 5:30 p.m. - They put some more sections on the west side arch.  I know some of you might be tired of hearing about the All Star game but you cannot imagine how it has taken over the neighborhood.  There are people everywhere and queues for everything.  It's just wild and likely going to be even wilder tomorrow.  If I were working on the stadium, I'm afraid, I'd spend a fair amount of time looking down at the crowds.
071001.jpg (119992 bytes)071001a.jpg (127009 bytes)Tuesday, July 10, 5 p.m. - First the picture on the left.  The Styrofoam in the seats has been mostly removed...  And, I got the official word that the tarps were hung by the painters so they don't drip paint onto the seats.  Now the photo on the right.  Tom Tran from our office at Par3, got this shot from inside the ballpark and it's a great shot of both stadiums!  Thanks, Tom!
071101.jpg (120644 bytes)Wednesday, July 11, 5:45 p.m. - The west side arch is growing rapidly.  Otherwise it looks like it's just more work everywhere.  Tomorrow I have a business meeting that will go until dark.  I'll try to get a photo before I leave in the morning but if you don't see one here by about 8 a.m. you'll know that tomorrow will have to be a no picture day.  Sorry.
071201.jpg (107304 bytes)Thursday, July 12, 6 a.m. - Well, we got really lucky.  This is the first day in a long time that the sun isn't screaming first thing in the morning.  A few well placed clouds enabled me to get a decent shot even this early! The foundation for the big scoreboard is getting more and more action.  I understand that the installation of that scoreboard will start on the 23rd.  It's coming in sections and will be put together on site.  We'll get a good view but it's going to seriously cramp our stadium view.
071301.jpg (122567 bytes)Friday, July 13, 5:15 p.m. - No real big news on the part of the site that we can see, but Tony prompted me today that First and Goal has some great new photos up.  And he is very right.  They have a lot of close up shots of the work in the stands and some great fun shots of the All Star stuff.
Saturday, July 14, 2:30 p.m. - Today's big picture really shows the east side arch and its progress.  The regular photo has a circle.  Along about last Monday, they changed the outside appearance of the lump!  I noticed it yesterday when I was walking by the site.  It looks nice.  I don't know if they've painted the southeast beak yet.
Sunday, July 15, 1:30 p.m. - Today you get today's photo and this day last year's photo (top right) and a bonus!  There is a guy out there today who has been working so hard.  He's clearing out a huge bit of ground that has, since a year ago last March been the major part of the big rock pile.  As you can see, there is still some rock pile left, but not much.  I'm wondering what's going to go on the spot he's clearing out!
Monday, July 16, 5:30 p.m. - Today we have moving tarps on the east side.  And, if you look in the very top right hand corner of the photo, you can just see the dog house that was added there today.  But, the big news, is that one of the cranes escaped!!  See?  He's outside the bowl.  They've taped off the area they cleared from the rock pile yesterday but they haven't put anything in there yet.
Tuesday, July 17, 4:30 p.m. - The mystery is solved.  I know now why they cleared out the rock pile area.  It's so they can assemble the view blocker - aka the big scoreboard!  You can see a piece of it in the far left, lower part of today's photo.  The painters are making progress or at least moving their tarps around.
Wednesday, July 18, 5:15 p.m. - They are wasting no time in putting together that scoreboard.  It's going to be quite the thing.  And... speaking of things you can't see in my photo... Tony sent a note that they are putting in blue seats in the far south section.  It's only a matter of time before we can see them in our view.    I love getting notes from the readers of this page.  Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to tell me that you are checking the progress here.
Thursday, July 19, 5:15 p.m. - We have a new wall today!  In the red circle you can see a new wall in between the low one that has been there a while and the slopping part of the score tower base.  It just came out of nowhere.  Wild.
Friday, July 20, 4:30 p.m. - Yesterday we got a new wall, but that turned out to be peanuts compared to today's new development.  Completely out of nowhere, they found a huge piece of concrete and laid the beginning of the foundation for the grand staircase!  Usually, I can see the parts and pieces of things before they get installed but they either just brought this in this morning or have been keeping it hidden from me.  Wow.
Saturday, July 21, 1 p.m. - Today, you can see the parts that will go into the rest of the staircase foundation.  There is a bit of work going on today.  I can hear it but I can't really see who's doing what.  The big version of today's photo gives you a good view of the west side roof action.  They are welding the arch pieces together before they lay in that last piece.  It's really amazing how far along they are.
Sunday, July 22, 11 a.m. - This morning the Sunday Rock Pile worker was back.  He flattened out the top of the center of the pile and then quit.  But, I did find out that a lot of the pieces for that surprise grand stairway foundation are hiding behind the rock pile.  This time last year, we were a full 3 lumps shy of a full stadium.
Monday, July 23, 5:15 p.m. - Ok, now you can see why they are calling that staircase grand!  They really filled out that area with more waves of concrete.  Today's additions are truly dramatic and you can get an idea of what it's going to look like.  Wow.  What a wonderful feature.
Tuesday, July 24, 5:15 p.m. - Well, they are, apparently, serious about this scoreboard tower thing!  But, hey, if they don't fill in between those beams, my view won't be blocked much at all! Whaddya think are my chances?!
Wednesday, July 25, 11:30 a.m. - Today's photo was taken while Q13's Harry Higgins caught the action for tonight's 10 p.m. news. He and John Yaeger were in the neighborhood for the official topping off - the adding of the last piece of the west side arch.  I got a note last night from Becky who has the coolest looking site.  It's a must for you Seahawks fans.  Check it out.  And, don't forget to keep an eye on the ClamCam forum.  It's often quiet but sometimes - like yesterday - there's a bit of a flurry.
Thursday, July 26, 5 p.m. - Today is Jeff's day!  Those of you who have checked the ClamCam forum know that Jeff's been just about to bust to see seats.  Jeff, check the red circle... those are seats!!!  They still have plastic on them so they don't look as blue as they will when the plastic comes off.  And... speaking of seats, Tony sent a link to a cool webpage where you can click on your seat and see what the view will be like.  It's on the official Seahawks site.  And, finally, from the ClamCam forum, Jeff posted the URL to a page of really great photos of the construction from all different vantage points.  You gotta see this.
Friday, July 27, 5 p.m. - I missed a big one yesterday, but, fortunately, Terry didn't and sent me a note.  They finally painted the beak yesterday! It makes such a huge difference in the whole look.  I cannot believe I missed it. Thanks, Terry!  Today they added some big pieces to the big scoreboard.  Oh! and... more seats!
Saturday, July 28, 12:30 p.m. - There were a bunch of workers on site early this morning but I don't see any now.  The ones I saw this morning were over by the seats and on the west side roof.   Tony discovered new photos on the First and Goal site.  I snagged one for here because it's such a great shot of those new seats!
Sunday, July 29, 2 p.m. - Lately, Sundays have been quiet on the site but not today.  It was a special day for one group.  I'm guessing it was one of the worker groups as it was just outside the main construction trailer.  With my binoculars I could see they had a delicious looking spread.  Whole families had on hard hats and took site tours.  It was fun to watch.  I'm guessing that the event included the game as they all cleared out about the time the game was starting.  Nice contrast in the weather between this year and last!
Monday, July 30, 6 p.m. - Because I was late getting home to get the photo today, and the sun is not out, we have a photo that shows more than usual.  You can even see the seats on the east side that go all the way down to the field.  And, you can clearly see that I won't be able to see any of the game.  I'll just have to watch the crowds.
Tuesday, July 31, 5:30 p.m. - That scoreboard is growing fast!  I have it on good authority that the upper most piece will ceremoniously be placed on Thursday.  I'm going to do my best to, of course, get a shot of it in progress if at all possible.
