The New Stadium...

April 2002

remember, all photos are thumbnails - click on them to get the bigger version
When you see  you can click on it and get a really big, non-zoomed version of the day's photo!
Every Saturday I take an extra large photo and
every Sunday I replay the photo from the same day the year before.
Monday, April 1, 3:30p.m. - They took the form off that thing in the middle of the plaza (see red circle).  Still not clue what it might be.  There is also a thing (I cannot tell what it is) up on the ledge of the northwest tower.  It's been up there for a couple of days but they moved it a bit today.  I'm thinking maybe painting supplies??!!  Oh and I also found out that the lights - the ones you can see in the concrete from Dan's cam view - are a section of 123 runway lights.  They are all different and should make quite a show!
Tuesday, April 2, 4 p.m. - The wall got broken up!  It's now a group of stumps.  You can see some of them in the red circle and I've placed an arrow next to another one.  They must have a different future than I first envisioned.  Interesting...
Wednesday, April 3, 4 p.m. - Well, wouldn't you know it?  They started painting yesterday and I totally missed it!  See the band just above the bricks?  They did that yesterday and I was asleep at the wheel.  But, today's painting - even I couldn't miss!  Also when I snapped this, there was a worker in the basket coming down from the scoreboard structure - in the circle.
Thursday, April 4, 5 p.m. - We are action central around here today!  Paint and Porta Potty Parade and trees!!!  They painted the beak holder today.  And there are more Porta Potties lined up - even more than the photo caught.  But, the big news is the trees.  Looks like there are at least a couple of dozen of them.  They are still balled so they probably won't live where they are currently standing.  Should be fun to see where they are going.
Friday, April 5, 4:15 p.m. - The painter was sure busy today!  And, I noticed something new in the elevator wells.  I had to get out my binoculars to see but they have already installed the plaques that tell you what's on what floor!  You can't really tell in the photo but I did circle one - you'll have to trust me.  That's what they are.  They probably installed them a while ago but they had that plastic over the openings so we couldn't see them or the nice little railings that they put up in each well.
Saturday, April 6,  3:30 p.m. - The painter was out early today.  I went to run an errand and saw him going up in his cherry picker.  I like the color.  We lost a few more trailers this week out of our 'office city'.  It's kind of sad to see them go.  I watched them go in.  Watched them build on their porch roofs and now I'm watching them tear down and move out.  Oh well.  At least we have a record of it all!
Monday, April 8, 6:30 p.m. - Wow.  Daylight Savings Time makes a great picture.  They really are defining that Plaza space.  I happened down Occidental today and noticed that the painter still has a lot of work to do.  The entire southwest corner of the stadium is currently paint-free.  Robert discovered some newish aerial shots at seahawks.com.
Sunday, April 7, 1:25 p.m. - There are some people on the site (I circled them) today but they look like they might be touring as opposed to working.  This time last year I was in South Carolina so I had to go back two years to get today's historical perspective.  Wow.  I had forgotten about those boxes they took off the side of the Kingdome and lined up along the west border of the job site.  Wonder where they went?
Tuesday, April 9, 5 p.m. - We've got what looks like the beginning of curbs!  And, we lost a few more work trailers.  It was a wet and windy day here but they got a lot of yard work done anyway.
Wednesday, April 10 5 p.m. - I just noticed today that they have installed some kind of gating to the left of the scoreboard there at the top of the steps.  I circled it and circled a spot on the northwest tower the painter forgot!  But, the big news is the latest photos on First and Goal.  Rikketyrik is the one who let me know this time and these are the best - great details.  The first one is of the new trees - tulip trees - and you can see my house behind them!
Thursday, April 11, 4:30 p.m. - New gating today on the left side of the stair tops (see circle).  And they planted trees in an area off to the right (see arrow) that doesn't quite get in the picture. They are different trees than the tulip ones we can see.  They also put red stakes around in that big patch of dirt right in front.  Things are shaping up!
Friday, April 12, 4 p.m. - The big news today won't show up until tomorrow's XL photo but back on August 22 of 2000, I pointed out that they were building a roof over some trailers and making it kind of fancy...  Today they are tearing it down.  Taking it apart bit by bit.  We are losing about a trailer a day these days.
Saturday, April 13, 3:15 p.m. - There were a few people working on site this morning but it looks like they gave it up and left about noon.  In the big picture today you should be able to see the trailer roof I was talking about yesterday (lower left of the photo) and the new trees I mentioned earlier in the week - the ones they have planted.
Sunday, April 14, noon - A nice cloud just passed over and enabled me to get off a fairly good shot today.  On the right, of course, is this day last year.  First and Goal has even more new and some pretty amazing photos up.  They are getting really good at keeping up with photos these days.
Monday, April 15, 5 p.m. - It looks like we have new dirt in this photo but it's just rain.  It looks like they got more ground work in before the rain, though.  More little walls and curbs.
Tuesday, April 16, 5 p.m. - Yesterday they started this strange orange thing up the stairs to the left of the scoreboard.  Today they added even more. It's that orange temporary fencing and I can't fathom what it's there for.  Sure does clash with the stadium colors!
Wednesday, April 17, 4 p.m. - It's really hard to see because of the shadows (darned sun!) but they installed handrails on the stairway today.  Greg surmised on the ClamCam Forum that the orange fencing was to prevent people from walking on the steps while they did the finishing work.  I surmised that Greg has probably nailed it.
Thursday, April 18, 1 p.m. - Lots more yard work today and the new pics at First and Goal indicate that I was wrong.  Can you imagine?  I said a couple of weeks ago that the trees that they had planted were different than the tulip trees they have in the holding area.  Apparently the ones they planted, are, in fact, tulip trees.  Oh well!
Friday, April 19, 4 p.m. - Isn't that a wonderful sky in today's photo?  We had no rain today and the workers took great advantage.  The plaza is really starting to shape up.  Still hard to believe they will be totally finished in just over two months.
Saturday, April 20, 5 p.m. - When I first pulled this shot out of the camera it looked, with the sky like that, like one of the renderings that the architects did!  There have been people out there working in that plaza all day.  They have been mushing down dirt and building forms and pouring concrete like it was a weekday!
Sunday, April 21, 2 p.m. - I saw workers going to and from their cars today.  They must be working on the inside because I can't see any other action.  This time last year, Big Blue was a daily favorite.  Wonder how he's doing?
Monday, April 22, 5 p.m. - We lost a few more trailers over the weekend - or sometime recently.  I just noticed they were gone today.  They have masked off the elevator doors in the northwest tower.  Maybe they are going to paint them?  And, more concrete poured today.
Wednesday, April 24, 5 p.m. - Turns out I got home today in plenty of time.  More concrete.  I'm sure they are working on those steps but I can't really see any change.  The north end of the site - the part you can really only seen in the Saturday XL picture is really looking different.  Fewer trailers and lots more open space.  It's starting to look a little abandoned.
Tuesday, April 23, 5:30 p.m. - More of the same today - yard work.  My front yard is going to look so wonderful.  For the next two days I will be in a meeting downtown.  I'm hoping that with these longer days, I'll be able to get a photo but when I'll be able to post it is going to be the trick so just know that things won't be on a normal schedule here again until Friday.  Oh and, of course, there are new pics up at First and Goal. Really.
Thursday, April 25, 6:30 a.m. - I was able to grab a photo early this morning which, obviously does not show much progress from yesterday's.  It's 9 p.m. now and too dark to see much.  Sean, however, reminded me that I haven't posted a link to Charpy's fabulous photos in a while so you might want to check out his high resolution shots taken from the Smith Tower.
Friday, April 26, 4 p.m. - I am somewhat at a loss for words here.  I got an email early this morning suggesting that I check out the First and Goal web cam and that's how I discovered the new artwork.  I found out that it was added mid-day yesterday.  I've been working hard all day to figure out something positive to say about it.  The best I can come up with is maybe it's temporary?
Saturday, April 27, 2 p.m. - I got a note saying that the traffic light thing is Native American artwork.  So I guess it's not very politically correct of me to criticize it but I just can't love it.  And I'm really trying.  We lost a couple of more construction trailers today.   We've now got about half of what we did when the place was booming.
Sunday, April 28, 7 p.m. - The sun nearly made me forget today's photo!  It was so bright all day that I couldn't get a good shot and then I got involved in the Mariners game and the result of that game just bummed out my memory. Sad but true.  Oh, Sean sent this link for more info on the traffic light artwork...
Monday, April 29, 5 p.m. - Several people noticed and sent me email that they have taken all the plastic off the seats in the top section of the west side.  It's still on the seats in the section below which is really kind of the middle section but the lowest one we can see.  And I did hear from one person who does like the new artwork.  I'm trying and I think I'll at least get used to it.
Tuesday, April 30, 4 p.m. - Today's photo had a circle and an arrow!  And I need to correct yesterday's entry.  It is, of course, the east side seats we see.  I am directionally challenged, I know.  The circle is of that little tiny area that remained unpainted... until today!  The arrow is to designate the window to the sky boxes.  At lunch today I noticed that there was a very cool light show going on there.  Apparently they were doing something very colorful on the field and it was reflecting in the glass... It got me to thinking that even though I can't see the field, maybe I can watch the game reflected in those windows!
