The New Stadium...

January 2002

remember, all photos are thumbnails - click on them to get the bigger version
When you see  you can click on it and get a really big, non-zoomed version of the day's photo!
Every Saturday I take an extra large photo and
every Sunday I replay the photo from the same day the year before.
Tuesday, January 1, 12:30 p.m. - I know I'm still on December's page but I think I'm going to hold off moving to a January page until this weekend.  The new tour page is up!  It's full of photos and they are all extra large.  Check it out!
Wednesday, January 2, 1:30 p.m. - There was a good bit more activity out there today.  Trucks moving around and cranes craning, etc.  I did see, on my tour, that the steps on the grand staircase actually are sets of steps with little landings in between.  And, where the bottom step is not way higher than the ground, the rest of the Kingdome will be used as fill to raise the ground up to meet the bottom step.
Thursday, January 3, 2:30 p.m. - Boy, they weren't kidding about getting started on the Plaza in front of the grand staircase!  You can see that they have already started building up to the bottom of the steps.  Outside of the photo - in what used to be the top of the Kingdome parking lot - they are also getting a good start on it all.
Friday, January 4, 1:30 p.m. - Boy, I was sure asleep at the wheel yesterday. Fortunately, Rikketyrik was totally awake and saw that I caught an action shot!  The crane had just finished putting up the final section of mesh in the scoreboard tower!  I couldn't get the sun out of the way for today's shot but the biggest change is in the plaza grading - they are wasting no time getting that stuff done!
Saturday, January 5, 10:30 a.m. - Not a lot going on today, but in today's big photo, you can really see the plaza work I've been telling you about.  The rock pile is quickly going away.  I'm going to miss it!  The 2001 Year End page is ready and, I've added smaller versions of the photos on the latest tour page.
Sunday, January 6, 1:30 p.m. - The site is deserted today.  But, the parking lot (north of the rock pile) is beginning to fill up with boats for the boat show.  One thing I did forget to mention - on my tour last week I asked about any peep on the stadium's name.  Nothing yet.
Monday, January 7, noon - It has been raining all day and I would think that the rain would help the spreading and packing of the rock pile into the flat areas near the steps.  There are a couple of strange looking flat white things just at the base of the steps.  Even with my binoculars, I can't see what they might be.  If you are seeing some broken images on this page it's because the server where I keep them is apparently down.  They'll be back soon... I hope.
Tuesday, January 8, 1:30 p.m. - We got two more of those curious white things today in front of the steps.  Still no clue what they might be or be for.  When I took this picture there were all kinds of trucks and things crawling over the dwindling rock pile.  And, they are madly working on those steps.
Wednesday, January 9, 3 p.m. - Ok, so when was the last time we had so much action in the photo that we needed two arrows and a circle??!!!  Wow.  Ok, remember those white things?  They are the hustle boards!  And they went up today.  See arrows.  And Sharp-Eye Greg discovered that they were starting work on the elevator doors in the northwest tower (circle) yesterday.  Way cool.
Thursday, January 10 2:30 p.m. - At this rate, the last of the Kingdome will be no longer a rock pile by Saturday!  Wow. They are really plowing through it.  When I took this photo there was lots of action on site... trucks moving around, people moving around... It's funny, sometimes it just seems like a beehive and sometimes - even in the middle of a weekday - it's really quiet.
Friday, January 11, 1 p.m. - We got doors today on the elevator holes in that north west tower (the one on the right of the photo) and they've done even more yard work.  There are some red grid looking things on the ground in front of the steps and I can't make out what they will be.  But, I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.
Saturday, January 12, 3 p.m. - I just couldn't get the sun in the right place today and so the photos are so dark.  Sorry.  But, you can just make out the teensy little pile of rocks.  You have to go to the extra large version because the regular version doesn't even show it!  And some tidbits for you... the red steel thing at the bottom of the stairs is the structure that will form the main north tower scoreboard.  It goes up next week.  The elevator doors in the north west tower are the last elevators to go in.
Sunday, January 13, 2 p.m. - I did get confirmation that the hustle boards are really those from the Kingdome.  They were refurbished for hanging outdoors.  For the plaza they are building landscape berms.  They will also be laying out sidewalks there and along Occidental (the road between me and the stadium).
Monday, January 14, 12:30 p.m. - I got a note today that reminded me that I had not checked Charpy's website for his great photos of the site.  He's got a great history of the construction going from an entirely different vantage point.  Why don't you head on over there and check out his latest?! It seemed kind of quiet on the site today.
Tuesday, January 15, 12:15 p.m. - I caught a nice sky (nice for contrast, not so nice if you are looking for sun which isn't good for my photos, but people around here still seem to want it all the time anyway...).  The right hand side of the back of the big scoreboard turned yellow today...
Wednesday, January 16, 2 p.m. - Work continues on the inside of that big scoreboard... I suspect that soon it would be covered and we no longer be able to see inside it.  And... speaking of covered, we now have plastic over the elevators in the northwest tower.  I guess they don't want us to watch.
Thursday, January 17, 10:30 a.m. - I've been lucky with the light the past few days.  They are still working on the back of the scoreboard tower.  And they have really flattened and cleared out the plaza area.  I just saw on the news where we have a chance of snow in the coming days... that could put an interesting frosting on the site.
Friday, January 18, 10:30 a.m. - It looks like they moved the red steel things out so they could even up the ground just in front of the steps.  They have the whole plaza area all marked off now.  It's going to be really spectacular.
Saturday, January 19, 2 p.m. - It's a quiet day on the site and no snow... yet.  In today's big photo, you can really get a good view of the pre-plaza work and you can see the teensy little hill that was once the rock pile that was once so big, I could not see the trailers on the other side.  Amazing.
Sunday, January 20, 3:30 p.m. - It's a cold, sunny day here and the site is quiet as can be.  I do need to warn you that next week is going to bring a few days with no pictures.  Yep.  I'll be in a three day meeting on the other side of town and won't be home at all during the daylight. Sorry.  So, unless something different happens, no photos Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
Monday, January 21, 12:30 p.m. - Well, at least the sun cooperated enough for me to get one good shot before I abandon you all until Friday.  The site is obviously observing Martin Luther King day as there is not a soul to be seen there today.  Sorry, again, about the three day blackout...  Meet you back here on Friday.
Friday, January 25, 9:30 a.m. - I'm back!!  And they have been working on the scoreboard tower.  Remember those red grid looking things that were on the ground?  Well, I caught them installing the last one this morning.  They lifted it up over the tower and installed it on the south side.  The other big change is that they have brought in a lot of dirt and the rock pile is now a dirt pile.  You'll be able to see it in tomorrow's big pic.
Saturday, January 26, 1:30 p.m. - Today appears to be a day off on the site.  Nothing going on.  But, in the big picture, as promised, you can see the new dirt pile.  And, speaking of big pictures, you should really go over to Charpy's site and see his high resolution shots.  They are really good.  p.s. We had a little snow/hail squall about 3:30 this afternoon so I had to snap an extra photo today.  Click on the snowman...
Sunday, January 27, 8:30 a.m. - I took today's shot a little earlier than usual in order to capture that rare Seattle item, a snow storm!  Shortly after the photo was snapped, the snow stopped and now, 11 a.m., it's nearly all melted.  But, it was fun while it lasted.  An anonymous poster on the Clam Cam Forum noted, correctly, that the dirt pile is being built from dirt they are digging out of the field.  Charpy's photos give you a good view of the field where they are digging.
Monday, January 28, 1:30 p.m. - First and Goal has some new pictures up that clearly show the digging and grading of the field - the source of our new dirt pile.  Our days are already starting to get longer.  It was still daylight when I got out of work.  First time in a long time!
Tuesday, January 29, 1 p.m. - Hard to see a lot of changes in today's photo.  It was way cold here today so if I had a choice, I'd would had found something to do inside.
Wednesday, January 30, 1 p.m. - I had heard that part of the plaza making process was laying in underground electrical and I think that's what they were doing today.  I circled a worker standing in a trench that they had dug.  Also they are making progress putting the 'back' on the grand scoreboard.  They finished the left hand section and are about half way down the middle section already.
Thursday, January 31, 3 p.m. - More of that yellow got covered up today on the big scoreboard and they are still digging trenches.  I keep waiting for them to finish painting the northwest tower but I guess they are waiting for the rain to stop.  Could be a while.
